The Liebster Award

So, recently I was nominated for a Liebster award by Naomi at please go and check out her blog, it is really awesome!

Anyhoo, I was very confused about what the Liebster award actually was until I read Naomi’s post about it- when you are nominated, you must answer the ten questions given to you by your nominater (is that even a word?!), and then nominate ten other bloggers to answer the ten questions you want to ask. Whew. Let’s go!

1. What is your current favourite quote?

I’ll admit it, I’m a bit of a quote obsessive- one wall of my bedroom is plastered with ones I like! However, I do have one absolute favourite:

2. Name two people, real or fictional, who inspire you.

Okay, so number one is Camila Batmanghelidjh- she is a businesswoman, charity leader and author. Batmanghelidjh founded the charity Kids Company, which in 2012 helped approximately 17,000 children find help in a multitude of different forms, including psychotherapy, counselling, education, arts, sports and hot food. I think this is incredibly inspiring because there are so many children out there who have suffered traumatic experiences or don’t have access to the simplest of necessities, such as hot water and food, and Batmanghelidjh, with Kids Company, is trying to save every single one of them. What an amazing woman.

Number two is the campaigner Caroline Criado-Perez. In 2013, in Britain, it was announced that the picture of Elizabeth Fry on the back of the £5 note was to be replaced with a picture of Winston Churchill, meaning that the only woman on British banknotes would be the Queen; all other historically prominent figures would be male. Criado-Perez stood against this and campaigned to have at least one woman on a banknote; as a result of this, she suffered violent online abuse such as death and bomb threats. Nevertheless, she continued with her campaign and now writer Jane Austen will be depicted on the £10 note, probably as of 2017. While this doesn’t sound like much of a difference, it is actually quite a big step for womankind in Britain- so yay Caroline Criado-Perez!

3. Favourite breakfast to wake up to?

Who doesn’t love good ol’ pancakes?

4. Are you an early or late riser?

It depends on what day of the week it is- from Monday to Friday I wake up at around 6.30 am, because I don’t like being late on working week morning! But on Saturday and Sunday, it’s a totally different story- I often stay up very late the night before, reading or making posts, and sleep in until 9 or 10 am.

5. What do you aspire to do with your blog?

Laurelandlily came to fruition when I started sharing sets from my Polyvore account on WordPress. Polyvore is a website where you can make digital collages from just about anything you want, although fashion and beauty are the main focuses. I had been creating on Polyvore for around two years when I thought, “there must be a way to share this and connect with more people.” I had tried blogging before, but writing posts instead of just sharing collages, so I decided to give it a go. Hopefully, this blog inspires people to be more creative and individual with their fashion- it makes me sad when I see groups of people wearing all the same styles, because they are afraid to stand out. If you want to wear a floral turban and palazzo pants, go for it! Why not sport a charity shop ballgown and Converse? Be yourself.

6. Do you ever write New Year’s resolutions? Why or why not?

Every year, in late December, I think “this year, I’ll actually make resolutions and I WILL STICK TO THEM. LIKE GLUE.”

I never do.

Why? I’m not sure- there’s something inside of me that always goes, you don’t need resolutions! Be a free spirit! Unfortunately, this isn’t great when it comes to getting things done! If I have a short term goal, I’m usually pretty good at achieving it (well, there are a few exceptions- nobody’s perfect!), but I struggle with remembering and keeping long term targets.

7. What is your favourite brand of stationery?

This is really boring, but it’s probably Biro! I think that all those quirky and cute stationery brands such as Paperchase and ones you can find on Etsy are fabulous, but there is nothing I love more than opening up a new box of Biros, taking a fresh page, and beginning to write with that deep black, pearlescent ink.

8. What is your favourite city in the world?

London! I lived on the outskirts of London until I was about eight, and me and my family would sometimes take day trips into the city; actually, despite having moved a couple of hours away, we still occasionally do. I love the hustle and bustle and the vibrancy of London; the paradox between the hush and rest of St Paul’s Cathedral and the chattering, shimmering crowds that gather outside it; the myriad of entertainers, perfomers and booksellers that is South Bank; the anonymous monumentality of Foyles, a bookshop that is grandiose in size yet charmingly unassuming in nature.

Is that too much to say about a bookshop?

9. Do you prefer art on digital media or traditional media or both?

Although I don’t do it very often, I really like painting, especially with oil paints. My favourite media is probably traditional collage, using paper and glue- much of the wall space in my room is taken up by pictures I have cut out of magazines and Blu-Tacked into a kooky little medley! I also love making digital collages- that’s how I make my posts, after all- as I feel it gives you more freedom of terms of what you can put into it, but traditional is my favourite. I think.

10. What is your passion in life or motivation to do what you do?

I would consider myself a feminist, and hopefully at some point in the very hazy future, I will be able to study Gender and Women’s Studies, and later become a professor of the subject; learning about women in history, the media, other cultures, religion and the modern world is definitely one of my passions. However, until then, creating outfits, reading, writing, playing piano, singing, baking- these will all remain my interests, and I will continue sharing them with you!

Okay, here are my ten nominees:

Musing Spot-

Samantha Notebook-

Cocktails and Country Tales-

High Heels and Record Deals-

Miscellaneous Quotes- – like I said, I’m a quote obsessive.

The Chicago Chic-

Plume Boutique-

The Para-Noir-

My ten questions for you:

1. What is your earliest memory?

2. Is there a film, book, object, person or place that makes you cry every time you are confronted with it?

3. Who is your favourite architect or artist and why?

4. If you had to be a different person for a day, who would that person be and why?

5. Have you read a book that’s changed your life? How come?

6. Do you have a favourite song? Which one, why?

7. Dr Seuss or Roald Dahl? (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, get thee to Google IMMEDIATELY.)

8. Do you have siblings? What’s your relationship with them like?

9. Where did you grow up? Did you like it there?

10. Favourite film? Why?

Shout out to Naomi ( for the nomination and I hope you enjoyed this post!

Thanks for reading!
